Weekly Rundown, December 16

We continue introducing you to the most notable news in the AI domain with our weekly roundup and illustrations for them.

  • Meta added multimodal AI as an assistant to its Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Meta’s artificial intelligence can now recognize things around you quite quickly, with only a few seconds of pause before a response arrives. The conversation begins with “Hey Meta” and an offer to look at the item and perform an analysis. For example, tell the recipe for a dish you saw or come up with an interesting caption. The glasses can recognize what you see by taking a photo, which is then analyzed by AI.

  • Apple released MLX, a machine learning framework and library of MLX Data models.

These are tools for developing AI applications based on Apple chips. MLX is software for training language and generative AI models, such as Llama and Stable Diffusion. It exclusively runs on Apple Silicon chips.

MLX Data is ready-to-use training datasets that are also optimized for Apple chips. You can download everything on GitHub. Using these tools, you can create AI-powered applications for the Apple ecosystem. This is an important step for Apple in the AI field. The company has not been active in this area for a long time, but now we are waiting for a boom in AI applications in the App Store.

  • Tesla introduced the second generation of its humanoid robot, Optimus.

The robot is not doing anything serious yet – dancing, walking and moving boxes. But this is not all of its potential. The main difference from other humanoid robots is new hands with tactile sensors at the fingertips. Thanks to them, the robot can pick up and carefully carry fragile things, such as an egg (look at the image below).
